G’day Travelers! Following on from my top things to do in Phillip Island post, I thought I should put together my tips for first timers heading to Victoria’s Phillip Island. These are just a couple of quick tips I think would be handy to know before you go to Phillip Island for the first time.
Where is Phillip Island?
Phillip Island is about 2 hours drive south of Melbourne, Victoria, sitting in the Westernport Bay just off the Mornington Peninsular. The island backs onto the Bass Strait between Victoria and Tasmania and is connected to the mainland via a 640 meter bridge from the town of San Remo.
Where To Stay?
Phillip Island is a year round holiday destination. As such it offers a wide variety of accommodation options from hotels through to holiday parks and short-term house rentals scattered all over the island. My personal recommendation would be to stay in the township of Cowes, however everywhere on the island is only a short drive away.
Here’s a selection of some of the accommodations options on Phillip Island via Booking.com.
Getting To and From Phillip Island?
The simplest way to get to and from Phillip Island is by car. As I mentioned before it’s about a 2 hour drive from Melbourne (depending on the traffic). A car gives you a little more freedom in getting there and also getting around the island.
That said, there are a couple of public transport options to get to and from the island. To find out more about the daily coach and ferry services head on over to – http://www.visitphillipisland.com/category/explore/getting-here/
Getting Around Phillip Island?
Having a car on Phillip Island makes getting around and exploring the island much easier. There as so many fantastic beaches and look outs that are only accessible by car. However there is a public bus service that does cover most of the main attractions. For more information about the bus services on Phillip Island head to – http://www.southcoastbus.com.au/
Where To Find Food/What To Do In The Evenings?
There are plenty of options of places to eat and get out for the evening around the island. However personal recommendations are based around Cowes. Starting off with the Isle of White Hotel for a cheap meal and a couple of beverages and very casual evening.
While for something a bit more up market and unique to Phillip Island head to Pino’s (Pino’s Trattoria as it’s officially known) for fantastic Italian cuisine and amazing collection to MotoGP and Superbike memorabilia.
