Things to Know Before You go to Kiama

G’day Travelers! Following on from my favourite things to do in the Kiama post. I thought I’d put together some of my handy tips of things to know before you head down the New South Coast to Kiama for the first time.

Kiama, New South Wales, Australia

Where is Kiama?

Kiama is a small coastal town, located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, about a two hour drive south of Sydney. The township itself is between the regional cities of Wollongong (45 minutes drive north of Kiama) and Nowra (45 minutes drive further south).

Where To Stay?

Kiama is a relatively small town, but it’s a holiday town, which means there is plenty of accommodation options in and around the town. There are a several hotel options in the center of Kiama which are really convenient. Most things are within easy walking distance if you stay within the center of town.

Getting To and From the Kiama?

Driving to Kiama is half the fun of heading down there. The easy way is to follow the Princes Motorway which takes you all the way to Kiama. Alternatively there is the scenic route down the coast, through the Royal National Park and over the Sea Cliff Bridge offers some stunning scenery, even if it does add a bit of time to the trip it’s well worth it.

That said, Kiama also sits on Sydney Trains South Coast train line, you could take advantage of the train service to get you there. To find out about train services to Kiama, visit the Sydney Trains website –

Getting Around the Kiama?

Getting around town is really easy, the township itself is quite small and you could easily walk around the town and it’s only a 15 minute walk from the center of town out to the Kiama blowhole.

However if you are looking to go beyond just the township of Kiama and explore more of what the region has to offer, there isn’t a lot in the way of public transport and that’s where having a car would be recommended.

Where To Find Food/What To Do In The Evenings?

During the day the streets are lined with cafes offering all sorts of fantastic food options. Once the sun sets there are plenty of pubs and restaurants in the area to try out. I would recommend however making a booking, and reserving a table particularly on weekends. My picks for places to eat in Kiama are Cafe Parkview for breakfast and  JJ’s Indian Restaurant for dinner.
