Remote Tropical Island or Coffs Harbour – The Story Behind The Photo

Sail Boat - Coffs Harbour

When you capture a photo, you frame it up to tell a story, and that’s no different in this shot. From first glance you’d never guess that this photo was taken at Jetty Beach up in Coffs Harbour.

I was up in Coffs Harbour for the final round of the World Rally Championship, where I had a couple of spare hours after a compulsory photographer briefing to take in the some late afternoon/early evening sun and stretch the legs. Having driven up from Sydney earlier in the day, it was well overdue.

I ended up walking out on to Coffs Harbour’s famous jetty, funnily enough, the one the beach is named after. On one side of the beach was jam-packed full of people taking advantage of the great weather. While on the other side, well, this was the view I was presented with.

Three friends walking into the water with a sail boat? yacht maybe?, some sort of boat in the foreground. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up and I snapped the shot.

While the beach isn’t completely clear it, I tried to frame the shot to make it look a lot more isolated that it obviously was. Without booking a private island, a boat and a couple of models, it was closest I was going to get to shoot this sort of scene. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time.

Here’s a couple more photos, that I took early in the morning, just before leaving Coffs Harbour after the rally.
